Hello there, I am having serious trouble with my laptop which is windows 8.1 Toshiba Satellite. I have downloaded avast free antivirus several times after previous problems with Kaspersky and a system repair program called smartpcfixer.
I have uninstalled Kaspersky and de-activated smartpcfixer. When I downloaded avast the first time, after rebooting, I was told that the avast files were incomplete. When I rebooted, avast was automatically loaded and my laptop froze on please wait screen.
I managed to do a system restore and disabled avast whilst in safe mode. I went to delete avast and there was an option to repair the files, which I did and when my laptop restarted it froze up again and I have had to switch it off at the power.
When I use command prompt I am told that the system is unable to find a file needed for booting and that it is probably being blocked by an antivirus program. I can't get into start menu and several restores have failed since. In addition the computer can't repair itself in automatic repair. The question is - How do I disable an antivirus from command prompt? That is about all I have at the moment in terms of accessability. The other options on safe mode screen (light blue) have been of little use. I have read up on command prompt online and tried various commands and there seems to be discrepancies between my laptop and what is written about windows 8.1 online.
I can't find Taskkill and sc as well as a few others. Have tried scanfile, scannow. I do not wish to do a reset or refresh as it will cost me a lot of time.
I did recover it previously and logically it is just a case of disabling avast. It has also failed to install windows updates and I have some items quarentined in a trial version of Malware bytes (from mindspark interactive) I can't get task manager up with CTRL/ALT/DELETE or CTRL/SHIFT/ESC, i am assuming that this only works at start. Thanks, Gerald.
Hi, You have Windows 8.1, which has Windows Defender as the Anti-virus, which is disabled by other AVs. You have since installed Kaspersky (which you say is uninstalled), then Avast and a Trial version of Malwarebytes If it is the Trial version of Malwarebytes it is the Premium version which has a real time scanner, as the free version is not a Trial. Avast and Malwarebytes Premium both use real-time scanning, which causes problems and they should never have both been installed together. Or as you believe Avast caused the problem, try their Forums. Bill Smithers - Microsoft MVP July 2013 - June 2019.
